1967 Cyclone GT - Formerly Owned by: K.C. Dailey
Hi Doug,
While surfing I bumped into your site and to say the least I was
shocked and surprised, amazed, pleased, and insanely rocketed back to some
awesome fun times. I pulled a tour of duty in The Nam from Nov 67' to Nov
68', I was with the 101st Airborne Division 1/501st Infantry and had no
use
for cash out in the bush. I had my pay sent home and it grew over that
year
with the goal in mind of buying a hot car when I got back to the World.
In my squad and platoon dreaming and talking about cars filled a
lot
of our time during the periods shear boredom, and gave us something
tangible
to stay alive for when we were in it deep. It seems odd to think of it now
but I can recall times when we would rather look at the automobile adds in
Life Magazine than at Playboy.
Upon my return to the World I quickly found a 67' Mercury Cyclone
GT
390, it was a four speed floor shift, black interior, bucket seats, and in
the sound system it had a reverberater ( awesome at the time ). The color
was Inverness Green with a black vinyl roof. It has been my understanding
there were only 3,000 67' Cyclones produced.
I bought it used for $1,700. It had less than 10,000 miles on it.
When I had to report to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg NC to
finish my four months left in the Army I was driven crazy by what I will
call 4th gear rattle, the two finger reverse release on the shifter had a
life of its' own between 80 and 120mph. The first thing I did after
reporting in was yank out the factory shifter and install a Hurst.
You published a message from a Jimmie and Bob in which the said
they
were from Clifton NJ. I hope they tune in again to see just how small a
world we really live in because my father worked in Clifton, I lived in
Allendale and I bought my Cyclone in Englewood. Now I am on the beautiful
Outer Banks of N.C.
Attached are several pictures of my car, the last time I saw it
was
in NJ when I sold it and the new owner was headed to state of
Washington in
1970. I had run the heck out of it, she was one tired Cyclone,
but I sure
do wish I still had it. Sorry for
the length of this but my memories
put me on a roll.
K.C.
